Impaired Vision VR

I managed the delivery of a proof-of-concept VR research tool for the University of Essex, designed to explore how extended reality could support people living with visual field loss.

Working closely with the research team, I coordinated the development of a solution using eye-tracking VR headsets, a companion tablet application and a bespoke web portal to create a configurable testing environment that could support a range of visual impairment studies.

The tool replicated a user's blind spot and displayed a live visual cue in an area of clear vision, while recording performance and eye-tracking data across a series of interactive tasks.

During the pandemic, I led the adaptation of the project for remote testing, enabling researchers to configure secure trials, ship equipment directly to participants and collect results remotely. The project successfully demonstrated the potential of XR technology to support vision impairment research and provided the University with a robust platform for future studies.
